I think my favourite of your novels is Alias Grace, do you have a favourite?

If I had a favourite I would never tell, because the others would hear about it and get upset.  That would be bad luck. It was the same with my cats, when I had them.

Does each novel present a new and different challenge to your writing skills in terms of how you tell the story? Do you ever give up on a book because it won't work?

I’ve given up on several books because they didn’t work. Yes, I do like challenge. I never liked colouring books as a child. I couldn’t see the point of them. The books that didn’t work, however, had too much formal challenge in them but no end in sight. They got too much like mile-long doilies.
